Founded in 2010, CJDC initially focused on ensuring excellence in juvenile defense. Over the years, it expanded its scope to include nonpartisan research, policy analysis, and robust defense for youth prosecuted as adults. 

In 2023, under the leadership of Elie Zwiebel and in collaboration with Barbara Garza and Erin Pier, the organization transitioned into Transformative Justice Project. This change reflects a deeper commitment to confronting systemic oppression within legal systems and moving beyond traditional defense strategies. The name change was driven by a desire to shift away from language that perpetuates negative stereotypes associated with the term "juvenile." 

TJP's rebranding aligns with our ongoing efforts to challenge white supremacy, colonialism, and patriarchy, advocating for transformation and true justice. Our programs, including Education First, continue to provide youth representation in the fight against the school-to-prison pipeline, while our expanded services now offer more comprehensive support to system-involved youth.

Our new shared leadership model, embracing decolonization and holistic advocacy, positions us to better serve the community and drive systemic change. This transformation honors our past while boldly stepping into a future focused on transformative justice, aiming to create a society free from the violence of oppressive systems.
